29-Junarea Businesses thrive [+]
Oil spiked to a new record high Friday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid about 107 points , poised to post its worst June performance since The Great Depression. But a report from the U.S. Commerce Department says consumer spending rose sharply in May. The department says that's thanks in large part to the economic stimulus checks. Some local businesses say they've seen a spike in business, now that people have some a little extra cash. Greg Beaudin at Harrisonburg's Furniture & More says May was one of the best monthsthey've had in four years. Store managers say they saw business increase almost 15 percent last month. Almost all the stimulus checks are expected to be in the mail by mid-July.
26-JunWaynesboro fire [+]
Firefighters battled high heat, heavy smoke, and explosions to put out a warehouse blaze in Waynesboro Thursday afternoon. Fire officials say the fire ignited around 4 p.m. Crews from across the city and county cut into the construction warehouse to fight the four-alarm fire. Waynesboro fire officials told NBC29 a hot work light may have ignited a nearby pickup truck, sparking the blaze. Firefighters spent more than two hours keeping the flames from spreading to nearby oil barrels and tire stacks. There's little damage and no one was injured.
26-Junmurder trial delay [+]
The case of an Albemarle County man charged with a 20-year-old murder has been rescheduled until August. 67-year-old Alvin "Butch" Morris is accused of killing Roger Shifflett during an armed robbery in June of 1988 at the now-demolished Southwind Grocery Store off Route 20. Police say Shifflett was shot execution style. Morris was supposed to appear in Albemarle General District Court Thursday morning, but attorneys rescheduled the case. He's scheduled to be back in court on August 7.
26-JunI-64 shooter [+]
When accused Interstate 64 shooter Slade Woodson walked into a Waynesboro courtroom Tuesday afternoon, he was expected to plead guilty or not guilty to six charges from the night of the shooting spree. But that didn't happen. The 19-year-old was only inside Waynesboro Circuit Court for a few minutes. That was long enough for his public defender to waive Woodson's right to a speedy trial and push his plea hearing back another month. A city grand jury indicted Woodson last month on six counts related to two March 27 shootings. He's accused of shooting at a home on North Commerce Avenue and the Dupont Community Credit Union on Lucy Lane. Woodson will not have to enter pleas to those charges until July.
26-JunGun shop [+]
Brian Eugene Brubaker has been tied to robberies in Augusta County, Staunton, Greene County and Harrisonburg. One local gun shop owner says he's seen an increase in business because of those crimes. The owner of Nuckols Gun Works in Staunton, Chris Kincheloe, says, when residents started hearing about the alleged serial robber on the loose, many of them turned to Nuckols for protection. Kincheloe says more residents have come in looking for added protection in the form of a hand gun. He says it's not uncommon for an event, such as these robberies, to lead people to buy a gun.
26-JunBritish cyclists [+]
Traveling across the Atlantic Ocean was the easy part. A group of British police officers have spent the past four weeks in a grueling bicycle trip across the United States. The brotherhood of officers apparently reaches across the pond because the policemen from Suffolk, England took a pit stop at the Waynesboro Police Department for dinner and an overnight stay Wednesday. The officers began their trans-American trip on the coast of Oregon on May 31. Along the way they've experienced a tremendous variety of terrain and weather. Cyclist Neil Smith says they've had everything from below freezing, blizzards,.and then 111 degrees in Kansas. The cyclists have raised about $70,000 dollars for cancer research and a children's hospice.
26-JunAugusta robber [+]
The man who admitted robbing an Augusta County hotel back in December will spend eight years behind bars. 49-year-old Oscar Cones admitted using a handgun to rob a clerk at the Quality Inn just north of Staunton. Thursday, a judge sentenced him to eight years in jail. Authorities say Cones walked up to a clerk, showed a gun and demanded cash before ordering the clerk into a back room. The sentence will be added to time he's already serving for other convictions in Augusta and Powhatan counties.
25-JunBrubaker charges [+]
A man already charged with a series of armed robberies in Rockingham and Greene counties and the city of Staunton has now also been charged in Augusta County. The Augusta County Sheriff's Office says it is charging Brian Eugene Brubaker with the attempted robbery at the Ladd Convenience Store in Stuarts Draft last Friday. Brubaker currently faces armed robbery charges of the Augusta County Farm Co-op in Staunton, the Tractor Supply in Harrisonburg, the Forest Lakes Food Lion, and Boot-Vil and Crawford Saddlery in Ruckersville. He is currently being held Rockingham County Jail, but he appeared by closed-circuit television in a Greene County.
25-Juncrime increase [+]
Police around the Valley are reporting a high number of crimes recently and they say it could be a result of a downward economy. Staunton Police arrested a Verona woman Tuesday for embezzling money from the Wal-Mart on Richmond Road. Police say the economy may be a motivating force behind these crimes. Officer Lisa Klein says some suspects might justify the crime by arguing that the corporation won't suffer a loss. She says, "The average citizen pays a lot more for every item because of theft, because of shoplifting, because of embezzlement, because of bad checks, crimes like that. There is a tremendous amount of theft." The suspect arrested in the Wal-Mart embezzlement case is now out on bond. Any theft committed in Virginia that is worth more than $200 is considered a felony.
25-JunHarrisonburg crash [+]
Two people are recovering at Rockingham Memorial Hospital following a car crash in Harrisonburg Wednesday. Harrisonburg Police have charged Nelson Eugene Layman with reckless driving after he failed to yield to a motorcycle at the intersection of Liberty Street and Mount Clinton Pike. Police say Layman was driving in his car north on Liberty Street and made a left turn, crashing into the motorcycle, which was heading south. Police have not yet said what the extent of the injuries are, nor have they released the name of the man and woman riding on the motorcycle. Police did say that the woman was unconscious when emergency services personnel arrived at the crash site. The driver of the car was not injured.
