The Press Room and New Links

May 11, 2008 – 10:58 am

Many of the bloggers in Harrisonburg are quite accurately referred to as “citizen journalists”. They perform a community service by bringing fresh local news directly to their blogs, often scooping traditional media or even covering stories that would be completely ignored otherwise.

Because so many bloggers are news-hounds, I decided to put up a blog specifically devoted to hosting press releases intended to be shared with the blogging community. Anyone who wants to may access the press room blog directly, and anyone is invited to blog about news there that they find interesting. To put up your own press release, email it to pressroom at harrisonburgblogs dot com.

If the service becomes popular, then great. If not, that’s ok too. The real reason the press room exists is because I wanted to put out a press release to local media about Harrisonburg Blogs, and I wanted a place to host it without using a different site, or putting it somewhere that it didn’t really fit. Here’s the link to access the press release. And yes, I would certainly appreciate anyone willing to put up a post on their own blog about it!

The other thing I want to draw your attention to is the change in the links around town section. I’m using a mootools accordion (same as the “latest entries” section) in order to prevent the links widget from taking up too much of the sidebar. The list of links comes from a page on hburgnews.Once I found it, I decided that rather than reinvent the wheel, I’d just appropriate that list for use on hbblogs. Once again, a tip o’ the hat to Brent Finnegan.
